I'm Alberto R. Olivares, a proud native of Starr County, and I'm running for Sheriff with a vision to make our community safer and more prosperous. As a veteran law enforcement officer, I understand the unique challenges we face in South Texas. Here's an overview of the key changes I plan to implement if elected on November 5, 2024.
Street-Level Drug Enforcement (Enhancing Child Safety): Starr County, located along the U.S.-Mexico border, is a hotspot for drug smuggling. While federal agencies target criminal organizations, we need a focused effort on street-level drug enforcement to protect our children. As Sheriff, I'll lead a coordinated campaign with other law enforcement agencies and prosecutors to aggressively combat those who push drugs to our kids. Our children's safety is my top priority.
New Detention Center (Meeting Growing Needs): Our county jail is nearing its life expectancy, and our region's growth demands more jail beds. I propose hiring an independent consulting firm to assess the need for additional facilities. By securing funding from the United States Marshals' Service, we can build a new jail, potentially generating millions in revenue for Starr County. This project also paves the way for a much-needed juvenile justice center, addressing community needs while boosting our county's finances.
Community Engagement, Partnership & Transparency (Open Communication): Transparency is vital in public office. I'll actively engage with elected officials at all levels and connect with civic and social groups in Starr County. Through open communication, I'll ensure you're informed about the sheriff's office's plans, progress, and achievements. Building strong partnerships will be key to enhancing our community's safety and well-being.
Restoring Confidence and Morale (Creating Equality): We must address the concerns of inequality within the sheriff's office. To boost morale, I'll prioritize fair resource allocation for work schedules, overtime, equipment, vehicles, and uniforms. Nepotism will have no place in my administration, ensuring equal opportunities for all employees to thrive and advance within the organization.
Trust, Integrity, and Honor (Rebuilding Core Principles): Trust, integrity, and honor are the pillars of a successful law enforcement agency. In my administration, leadership will have true meaning. I'll lead with a strong moral compass, guiding my words and actions. Together, we will rebuild these principles to ensure that the Starr County Sheriff's Office serves with the utmost professionalism and dedication.
