STARR COUNTY ROOTS
I am Alberto Ramon Olivares, a Starr County native, a rancher, a son, a brother, a father, a husband to a loving wife and a long-time lawman.
I was born in Mission, TX and grew up in Rio Grande City, TX.
By the age of 13 I began to develop a strong work ethic following my father to his full-service Texaco gasoline station on Second St, Leo’s Service Station.
I also learned the ropes of ranching and cattle raising from my father.
During my high school senior year, my father encouraged me to buy my own herd of cattle and run an operation with him. That was my first source of income since back in the 1980’s, parents didn’t pay their children for work. Everyone pulled together to support the family.
I attended Catholic school through 5th grade and graduated from the Rio Grande City High School in 1989.
I learned to love and worship God from my mother, Ramona Olivares, a native of La Grulla, Texas.
EDUCATION & CAREER
I obtained a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Criminal Justice from Texas A&M International University in Laredo, TX. I attended two police academies and served as a Starr County Deputy Sheriff, Cadet in the McAllen Police Department (academy), and Rio Grande City Police Officer. In 1997 I accepted a position with the U.S. Border Patrol where I had a long and adventurous career for more than 26 years where I climbed the ranks.
I most recently served with the Border Patrol as a manager effectively assessed the operational environment, adversaries and challenges affecting Border Security in Starr County, TX. I commendably led and coordinated Border Patrol operations and administrative functions year after year prioritizing the welfare of over 450 agents and 68 river miles along the Mexican border. This dual effort was accomplished through leadership engagement with employees and stakeholders shifting resources while responding to threats and applying the whole of government approach for optimal results, at times with limited resources.
During 2015-2016, I served at Border Patrol Headquarters in Washington, D.C. managing the Remote Video Surveillance System, an Acquisition Level 1 program, for the Southwest Border and the Integrated Fixed Towers along the Arizona Corridor. I was awarded the Commissioners Award for Meritorious Achievement for managing those portfolios.
My education, training and career in law enforcement took me many places, but each time I left my Starr County home, I fought my way back. This is my home and here lies my heart.
I look forward to this next chapter in my career. I would like to make a complete circle by once again returning where it all began, with the Starr County Sheriff’s Office. With my education, training and experience, I know I will effectively lead the men and women of the Starr County Sheriff’s Office with ethical conduct, honor and integrity as my compass. With those disciplines, I will deliver an increased level of safety and security to all citizens and guests of Starr County, Texas.
