Veteran Lawman Alberto R. Olivares Announces Candidacy for Starr County Sheriff

Veteran law enforcement officer Alberto R. Olivares announced his campaign today for Starr County Sheriff. He is leaving his post as a U.S. Border Patrol Agent to return to the office that gave him his first post in law enforcement.

Starr County, Texas – Alberto Ramon Olivares, a proud native of Starr County with a distinguished background in law enforcement and a deep commitment to his community, has officially launched his campaign for Starr County Sheriff.

Born in Mission, TX, and raised in Rio Grande City, Alberto Olivares embodies the values and work ethic of South Texas. At the young age of 13, he began developing a strong work ethic while assisting his father at Leo's Service Station, a full-service Texaco gasoline station on Second St. He also learned the art of ranching and cattle raising from his father, instilling in him a love for the land and a dedication to hard work.

A graduate of Rio Grande City High School, Olivares went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice from Texas A&M International University in Laredo, TX. His journey in law enforcement led him to serve as a Starr County Deputy Sheriff, McAllen Police Officer, and Rio Grande City Police Officer. In 1997, he accepted a position with the U.S. Border Patrol, embarking on a 26-year career where he climbed the ranks and excelled as a manager, overseeing operations along the Mexican border in Starr County.

Olivares' commitment to ethical conduct, honor, and integrity earned him accolades and recognition throughout his career. He was even awarded the Commissioners Award for Meritorious Achievement for his management of critical programs in Washington, D.C., during 2015-2016.

Olivares aims to make a complete circle by returning to where it all began, with the Starr County Sheriff's Office.
